Arasan’s Ethernet Controllers are Intellectual Property (IP) cores that support the IEEE 802.3-2002 standard with MII (Media Independent Interface) and GMII (Gigabit Media Independent Interface). The available cores include the Gigabit Ethernet IP and 10/100 Ethernet IP. Both Ethernet controller IPs support full-duplex and half-duplex operations at 10/100 Mbps or 10/100/1000 Mbps respectively. The Ethernet IPs are completely IEEE 802.3 feature compliant. They have many advantages for embedded use including:

    • 32-bit / 64-bit Scatter-Gather DMA support to enhance system performance
    • Master AHB with programmable burst transfer frame size for optimizing bus traffic
    • Low gate count with configurable FIFO sizing for targeting different applications
    • Source code Verilog test environment with over 100 directed tests (35 UNH specific) to speed overall verification
    • Receive side error filtering to off load the host CPU processing spurious error frames
    • Automatic transmit side re-transmission on collision to relieve host CPU monitoring
    • Independent flow control for transmit (Tx), receive (Rx), or both for optimal switch application support

The Gigabit Ethernet IP and 10/100 Ethernet IP support a number of interfaces and optional features. In addition to the 4-wire MII and 8-wire GMII support, a 2-wire MDIO/MDC (Management Data IO and Management Data Clock) interface is available for control of an IEEE 802.3 compliant external PHY. The Gigbit Ethernet IP also supports Reduced MII (RMII) and Reduced GMII (RGMII) interfaces. Optional features include Jumbo Frame support for frames larger than 1518 bytes and Magic Packet support for wake up in PC type applications. An additional PCS (Physical Coding Sub-layer) with an 8bit/10bit interface is available for direct fiber applications allowing the Ethernet Controller IP Cores to support both copper and fiber applications simultaneously.

"Arasan is utilizing its membership in our Fast Ethernet Consortium in a way that demonstrates strong commitment to industry standards designed to facilitate improved networks." - Peter Scruton, manager of the UNH-IOL's Fast Ethernet Consortium.
